He lived in our apartment building during Pete’s senior year of college, and worked in youth ministry. When his girlfriend left him, he wrote her a song and Pete helped him with the music and instrumentation. It was a valiant effort, but it didn’t work.

rolaids time

I didn’t overeat. Really. But the variety of rich, delicious food overtaxed my stomach a bit.

Same thing happened to Foxxi. (For your sake, I won’t elaborate.)

We had a fun time with my parents yesterday and with Pete’s family today. The kids are plotting about pooling their money to buy Guitar Hero. Peter put it on his Christmas list, but he doesn’t think he’ll last that long.

If you have a dog, or you’re anything like me, this will make you laugh and laugh.

turkey turkey

Tomorrow I’m cooking my very first turkey, and I’m a little nervous. Twelve years of vegetarianism made Thanksgiving pretty easy, especially those holidays where a Tofurky was the featured dish. All you have to do with a Tofurky is thaw it out, baste and bake. (And if you forget to take it out of the freezer, you just bake it longer. No sweat.)

I picked up my fresh turkey this morning, compliments of my awesome-but-unnamed employer. It’s nestled in my refrigerator until tomorrow morning. Over my lunch hour, I picked up a roasting pan and a carving knife/fork set, along with a popup thermometer thing and a string-and-pins mechanism for sewing up the turkey’s opening after stuffing it.

We’ll also be making mashed potatoes and green bean casserole with produce from our CSA farm, and my mom is bringing pies. I need to figure out a stuffing recipe. The kids want Pete to bake his oat and honey bread.

Uh-oh, do I need to get a giant platter for the turkey? And where am I going to store all this stuff the other 364 days of the year?

Her photography and her Puppy 52 fashions caught my eye on the ThisIsBlythe boards. She definitely has a way with needle and thread, and her workmanship is impeccable. So is her illustration work. My blog logo is her design — I loved that she included my Blythe.

When all the other nurses at the Red Cross failed to find my veins, she came to the rescue. I loved her calm approach and her ‘yah-hey’ northern Wisconsin accent. We compared our tattoos and talked about deferrals. She made blood donation almost pleasant.

knitting update

Felted slippers afterThis is what I was knitting when we went to the So You Think You Can Dance performance a few weeks ago. Moon needed some new slippers, so I decided to try out this pattern from Craft magazine.

I had leftover wool from several other projects, and it worked out perfectly for this pattern. The whole thing is knit flat, in garter stitch. Couldn’t be easier. The fun comes when you fold the knit fabric and stitch it together to form this very elfin-looking footwear. If Moon hadn’t liked them, I’d have gladly kept them for myself.

I’ve been doing other knitting, too. Right now, I’m working on socks for my nephew — who admired the socks I had made for Sister #1. I felt pretty honored that he’d ask for such a thing for his 9th birthday.

FantineIn other knitting news, I finished Fantine some time ago, but hadn’t attached the collar button. I finally got around to it this morning. This is my self-portrait shot using the time honored technique of: hold the camera an arm’s length away, point randomly back to yourself and shoot. There’s another goofier picture that shows the sweater more clearly, but I didn’t feel like posting it here.

I really like the teal color, and I just realized it’s very close to what I chose for my Juliet sweater (which is on the queue for after I finish socks and more socks).

Also, I ordered one of the bags I had lusted over earlier. It’s on back order, sadly, but I should have it before Christmas. Can you guess which one?

tired

It was snowing today, perfect for making stew in the Crock Pot and watching movies. Which is what I did. I also worked on my nephew’s socks. I’m kind of dragging now. A warm bed sounds pretty darned good.

In 1978, I went with a friend to see him in concert. I decided we should try to go backstage afterwards. He was seated, and took my hand when I approached him. I told him I was a musician, too. He thought I was sweet.

He was grey-haired and handsome, with a reassuring bedside manner. He numbed my face, respecting my choice to stay awake during nasal surgery. When I opened my eyes, he was holding a chisel and hammer to my nostril. I thought he was kidding. He wasn’t.

conferences

Today we had parent-teacher conferences, first with Turbo’s homeroom teacher, and later with each of Moon’s teachers. Lots of running around the school buildings.

We didn’t hear anything new, of course. Turbo’s theme: super bright, tests well, doesn’t turn in the homework. He needs to get a handle on it before high school, so he can get through the system and go to college. I have a feeling he’ll do well in college, just because he picks up knowledge so quickly and effortlessly. But first he needs to achieve a good enough GPA to get accepted.

Good thing he’s still in 8th grade.

As for Moon, she’s awesome and has great ability, and needs to speak up in class a bit more. Two of her Bs would have been As if she had her hand in the air more often. Her teachers in general were highly complimentary. Three of them suggested she should consider pursuing their subject after high school.

All in all, not bad. This must be one of those good years.

We became pen pals in 7th grade. She lived just a few hundred miles away, but her life on a dairy farm seemed very exotic to me. We visited each other every year, riding a Greyhound bus. I was at her house when Elvis died.

We met as readers of Jodi’s blog. Actually, we’ve never been face to face; the closest we’ve come is snail mail. He sent mix CDs for my daughter, and introduced my kids to Homestar Runner. He and his wife have a cute little boy.

Nearly every time I ordered my green tea latte last winter, she was the one handing it out the pick-up window. She never failed to compliment my knitted handwarmers, even offering to buy them. I just made a new pair — next time, they’ll be her tip.

P.S. I hope she still works there.

There’s something about her. Perhaps her long, wavy hair with its dramatic streak of grey. Or her full lips and womanly curves…her glasses framing mischievous eyes. Her lovely voice or sassy attitude. Whatever it is, she catches the eye of guys half her age.

good stuff

Today, a friend whom I hadn’t seen in a while asked me how I was doing. And I immediately answered, “Great!”

“Wow, I haven’t ever heard you say that,” she said. “Usually you’re good, or doing better. But great? Things must really be going well.”

And you know, she’s right. I hadn’t really given it that much thought, but life is on a definite positive swing.

That is all. Carry on.

I remembered her parents from Lamaze class. She was born two days before Moon – they both had red hair. A year and a half later, we moved two houses away from her family. She and Moon are best friends. I think must be karmically connected.

She was smart, pretty, good at sports, and seemed way more comfortable with herself than most middle schoolers. I envied her long blonde hair and the ease with which she bantered with all the boys. Of course they loved her. I wanted to be her.

poor deer

Weirdest thing happened on the way home yesterday evening. Pete was driving and we were stopped at an intersection. I spotted someone across the street walking the biggest dogs I’d ever seen. Except there wasn’t a person with them, and they weren’t dogs. They were deer, running down the sidewalk of a fairly busy street.

I sensed trouble, and sure enough, they decided to cross. One was hit and landed square in the middle of the road — breathing heavily, tongue lolling out of its mouth. Fortunately, the driver hadn’t been going too quickly, so there was no blood and little damage to the car. A police car pulled up immediately. I’m sure the deer had quite a bit of internal damage and had to be put down. We didn’t stick around to find out.

The whole thing was sad, and also served as a wake-up call for me to Always Pay Attention! when driving. I keep an eye out for deer when I’m out in the country, but it never occurred to me that I should watch for them when I’m in the city. Lesson learned.
